The Constitution Project

The Constitution Project (TCP) founded in 1997 is working to reform the nation’s broken criminal justice system and to strengthen the rule of law through scholarship, consensus policy reforms, advocacy, and public education. Some of the issues they hope to reform are:  providing competent counsel to criminal defendants that are unable to afford lawyers; convicting innocent people and sentencing them to death; erosion of privacy rights and civil liberties post-9/11; and indefinite detention without charge of terrorism suspects. They also are seeking to reform sentencing laws that fail to provide due process and are racially disproportionate; advocating to update our laws to ensure that modern communications technologies are still covered by constitutional safeguards; and scrutinize the fallout of “tough on crime and terrorism” policies.
